I just read the list of all of potential actors to play Peter Parker in the new Spiderman re-boot and I feel like I’ve been privy to a sneak peak at a casting session for Twilight 5: Sparkle Magic. I…..sorry, I just barely avoided slipping into a coma thinking about it. How many more generic pretty looking white people can we cast as superheroes just for the sake of them being pretty and white? Didn’t we learn anything from Fantastic 4? What about The Hulk? Scrawny nerd scientist Bruce Banner played by the f$%king ripped BADASS from Black Hawk Down who kills people from his BIKE?? The character of Peter Parker is a nerdy, disturbed individual who struggles very much as he is violently forced to become Spiderman. These kids look like the biggest struggle they have had in their 16 years on earth is what v-neck goes with their suede Gucci shoes.
I could buy Toby Maguire as Parker because he is a goofy looking dude who has a real nerdiness to him. You felt like Flash would really try to kick the snot out of him and he seemed pretty helpless. I think if they are going to recast the man himself my #1 pick would be Donald Glover. He started a Twitter campaign to be considered for the role and people are responding very well to it. I am totally open to the idea and I think that it could be done in a way that could reignite the passion people have for Spiderman that the third movie crushed. Twitter has been buzzing non-stop on the subject and I think this is a possibility that Sony Pictures should seriously consider. Now the idea of a black Spiderman sends some people furiously to their keyboards as they spam hate for Donald because “that’s not how Stan made it!” If Marvel kept every detail from the original comics we would be stuck with a sea of white people and possibly like a blue or red dude and a bunch of aliens. Nick Fury is white in the comics and we have given him up to be played by Sam Jackson. Nobody stormed the Internet fueled with rage and slammed their keyboard through their tears, writing on all of the fan-sites. Well, I bet at least one dude did. If Sony is Legit going to re-boot this franchise so soon then I think they really need to switch it up. Donald Glover is awesome on Community and as he has said, he is not asking to be handed the part, he just wants a chance to audition. I think that it would be a huge mistake on Sony’s part not to let him. And as someone whose allowance consisted solely of X-Men and Spiderman cards, I think I know what I’m talking about.
